The Ill is THE Alsatian river by excellence, she contains years of history.

The Ill go through Alsace plain in the north, it takes it source in the Alsatian Jura at the Glaserberg in Winkel (near the Switzerland border) and ends 220 kilometers further in the Rhin at the North of Strasbourg. It also passes through the Sundgau hill, the city of Mulhouse, goes through all the Alsace plain then goes to Colmar and Sélestat before joining Strasbourg to end up its travel approximatively 10 kilometers north to the capital.

For the record Alsace is pronounce “Elsass” in german which means “Land of the Ill”, this is how the river founds its name. The river also participates to the names of several city such as Illkirch-Graffenstaden, a charming city 20 minutes from Strasbourg through our “nature” itinerary.

The Ill achieve its status at its arrival. Indeed, the river divides itself in several arms surrounding the historical heart of Strasbourg which contributes to its renown.
